Founded in 1954, Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society is one of the established cooperatives in Kirinyaga County, overseeing several affiliated coffee factories, including Mitondo. The cooperative supports thousands of smallholder farmers, most of whom manage small plots with an average of a few hundred coffee trees per household.
Through shared infrastructure and centralised processing, Mwirua FCS enables members to access markets more effectively and benefit collectively from coffee sales after operational costs are covered. Ongoing investments in processing equipment and quality control aim to improve consistency and long-term returns for members.
